Orders will be processed on Thursday 27th as normal. After this the next despatch date will be Thursday 3rd Sept 2009, for both standard and Express UK Deliveries and international orders.

Express delivery will not be available as a delivery option while Atom Retro's offices are closed for the bank holiday. If you want to order with Express Delivery please ensure you order before 11am on Thursday in order for it to be despatched in time for delivery on Friday. Express Delivery will be 'switched off' after our courier collects on Thursday lunchtime.

We've been stocking Ben Sherman Shoes since Spring 2009, and now the mens wear has landed! (Don't worry girls - we've also got some fab Ben Sherman Dresses, Skirts, Jeans and Tops on their way for you too!)

For fans of the Sixties and Mods, Ben Sherman will already be something your familiar with. Ben Sherman is one of the world most famous and well established Mod clothing brands. Founded in Brighton in 1963, by Arthur Bernard Sugarman, Ben Sherman began life as a shirt brand. Realising young people were eagerly buying the Oxford-cloth U.S. button-down shirt brands such as Brooks Brothers, Arrow and Hathaway, which at the time, these were only avalable from official importers.

Sugarman decided to produce a version of these shirts under the new 'Ben Sherman' label. The mods responded immediately, especially as Sugarman was using higher-quality materials and stitching-detail than the imported shirts. By 1965, the company had opened a small office on the upper floors of a shabby office-block in a London back-street, at 9 Carnaby St., which acted as the showroom for their collections. Today the Ben Sherman flag ship store can be found at 50 Carnaby Street, London.

By 1970, the high-fashion demand had passed, and the shirt was adopted by the skinhead subculture in the early 1970s, and later again by the mod revivalists of around 1979.

Today Ben Sherman are one of the most popular British Brands, and are as popular as ever with Mods all over the world. Ben Sherman is still famous for their shirts, with the Ben Sherman House Check Shirts and Gingham Shirts as popular now as in the Sixties. Ben Sherman have grown to feature almost every aspect of fashion, including jackets, Polos, Jeans and look out for something exciting and new coming out this Autumn!

Derbyshire based John Smedley is 225 years old this year, making it one of the oldest brands in the UK. The makers of the world finest knitwear were established in 1784 and is still owned by the original family today.

The eighteenth century was a booming time for the British knitwear industry. In the early days, the John Smedley mill specialised in spinning cotton and muslin which would be sent out to local cottages for use on hand frame looms. (At this time people would use looms at home to spin and made fabric and garments to sell). John Smedley soon expanded into knitting and hosiery manufacture - what it would become world renowned for.

In 1819 John Smedley's son, also called John was apprenticed to the company, and took over six years later at the age of 24. The new John Smedley set about radically modernising the business and expanding with the intention that all the manufacturing processes required to produce finished product should be under one roof, using the finest quality materials available, with a dedicated and skilled workforce. This would become the main principle of John Smedley, and ensured there continued success. Some John Smedley employees today are younger generations of original John Smedley factory workers.

The younger John Smedley also built Riber Castle, the family home until 1880. In 1875 the second John Smedley died, leaving no heir, so the business was passed onto a third John, a cousin J.T Marsden Smedley, who after his death in 1877 passed the company to his son, the fourth John B Marsden Smedley.

This John Smedley was chairman for 70 years, expanding the company greatly. During this time he installed new knitting machines, producing more versatile garments such as underwear and knitted outerwear. John Smedley become a limited company in 1893.

Continually growing over the next 50 years, John Smedley expanded its ranges for both men and women, making underwear, sleepwear, swimwear and of course all the knitwear they are famous for. During the Sixties the John Smedley polo became the polo of choice for the Mods, who loved the look, style and unsurpassable quality.

The majority of John Smedley garments fall into two categories, New Zealand merino wool and John Smedley's sea island cotton. John Smedley knitwear are fully-fashioned, fine-gauge products, an ultra lightweight fine knit that is rarely produced by other manufacturers. Once knitted, the body panels and sleeves are linked together by hand, stitch for stitch, to create the impeccable neat seams, meaning there can be over a million stitches in each John Smedley garment.

After knitting, the garments are washed using water from John Smedley's three springs giving the garments their characteristic 'soft handle'. Additional processes render the garments shrink resistant and machine washable. Each John Smedley garment goes through three stages of hand supervised pressing to ensure correct fit and shape before highly trained seamstresses hand finish the garments, applying neck trims, buttons and John Smedley labels.

For this reason, John Smedley has remained the leading brand and manufacturer in their field, staying a firm favourite of Mods and any one who can appreciate fine quality and fantastic design. A few examples of John Smedley fans are Tom Cruise, Madonna, Harvey Keitel, Sean Connery and Nicole Kidman. John Smedley polos were also worn in the iconic Mod film, Quadrophenia.

Sixties Style Icons: 'Barbara Hulanicki and Biba'

A new feature for the Atom Retro blog! A series of Retro, Sixties and Mod style Icons which influence and inspire Atom Retro and all of us who work here.

To start of with, the world famous Sixties Boutique, 'Biba' and its founder, Barbara Hulanicki.

"The louder the music played the faster the girls moved and more people appeared in the shop…. I had sold every dress by 11."

One of the most famous Sixties Boutiques and the epitome of Swinging London, Biba was founded by Barbara Hulanicki and her husband, Stephen Fitz. Beginning as a small mail order business, Biba became an 'overnight' success in May 1964 when they were inundated with orders for a pink gingham dress, similar to one worn by Bridget Bardot. The advert for the dress had been published in the Daily Mail and received 4000 orders immediatly - eventually selling 17,000 dresses!

The Biba look - despite it being the Swinging Sixties - was Retro reflection of twenties, thirties and fourties fashions, with a strong Art Deco influence. Colours were dark and mysterious - plums, blacks, blueberries and dark browns. The look was complete - no matter what dress you bought, you could find a coat, shoes and accessories to go with it! - But aimed at predominantly young women - if you were over 30, you were considered old in the Biba store! The sales assistants were similarily youthful and it was hard to tell the difference between the customers and the employees! Biba broke down the haute couture style and pomp of the past and became instantly modern, cool and sophisticated.

The Biba Boutique opened in Abingdon Road in Kensington, London in September 1964 to instant success and interest. The shop moved to Kensington Church Street which was 9 times the size of the original store. Financial problems lead to Dorothy Perkins and Dennis Day buying up 75% of Biba, and forming Biba Ltd. However, this extra investment meant the brand and stores could be expanded and improved. By the early 1970s Biba had become so popular they opened a five story department store - the first to open in London since the end of World War 2. 'Big Biba' became a hang out for Artists, poets and students. Each floor had its own theme - a mens floor, a childrens floor, a home floor, a book floor... and a restaurant on the top floor which boasted rock stars among its patrons. In its hey day the store attracted over a million customers a week.

Sadly, it was not to last and Hulanicki left in 1975 over disagreements about creative control. The label also failed to adapt to new trends and fashions and sales dropped. Dorothy Perkins, the controlling shareholder, sold the trademark and shut the store. The new trademark owners attempted to keep the brand alive and had their own Biba store which traded for about 2 years before fading away too.

However, this is not the end of the Biba story. Biba was relaunched in 2006 under designer Bella Freud. There are plans for a new Biba boutique to open in London - so who knows? You could soon be wearing Biba again!

When will I recieve my Express Delivery if I order BEFORE 12pm Wednesday 8th April?

Your order should be despatched on Wednesday 8th April and will be delivered on Thursday 9th April. Please note, our usual restrictions will apply and your order will be subject to stock availabilty and whether our courier can deliver to your address within this time. Express delivery is for UK Mainland addresses only. Some Scottish postcodes are a 2 day delivery time in addition to this. Please contact us if you need more information.

When will I receive my Express Delivery if I order AFTER 12pm Wednesday 8th April?

Your order will be despatched on Thursday 9th April (if ordered before 12pm on Thursday 9th April) and will be delivered by our courier on the 14th April (following Tuesday). Our courier will not deliver over the bank holiday.
